After you get your new patio or deck built, it's time to start thinking about how you can decorate to maximize the utility of the space. Choosing the right furniture can be just as difficult as choosing the paving stones and size!
Patio Futniture & Sizing
The first thing to keep in mind is the size of the patio or deck itself. You don't want to choose furniture that is going to overpower the space and not leave you any room to entertain. To really pick the best furniture, its good to keep in mind what kind of entertaining you're going to be doing.
Grill and Table
It's good to start with a grill (if you don't already have one!) or making sure you have the perfect spot for your summer bar-b-ques. With the grill, you'll want to make sure that it's both central but not overpowering the space, so we recommend finding the perfect corner or having it be close to the edge of the patio.
Next up, it's good to have a table and chairs with enough space for your family. Table shape really comes down to personal preference, but rectangular tables tend to be able to squeeze more seats in when needed. When it comes to tables, you'll also want to keep in mind the material. It is possible for some wood stains to leave a stain on the paver or for some metals to leave rust drops depending on how water collects.
Lounge Chairs and Outdoor Sofas
Once you get the basics out of the way, it's time to thing about how else you would like to use the space when you're not grilling or eating outside. This is where lounge chairs and an outdoor sofa can come into play.
Lounge chairs are going to be better for smaller spaces. They are easily moved around and can be placed on the grass when you need extra space on the patio or deck. A lounge chair is going to be perfect for sunbathing on a summer afternoon and can turn into casual seating when you have guests over to enjoy the space.
An outdoor sofa is going to be a more permanent fixture, while still being able to move depending on the size and functionality you end up with. They also make an inviting space for you to enjoy with guests or a relaxing evening.
With both lounge chairs and outdoor sofas, its good to keep in mind table space. Many sofas come with, or have matching, coffee tables perfect for both L-shaped and straight layouts and for food and drinks. A coffee table may be too large for a pair of lounge chairs, but a smaller side table would be perfect to fit between, or next to, each of the chairs for cellphones, food or drinks.
Fire Pits
Once you get the seating arrangements all set up, it's time to think about how to stay warm in the cooler fall nights and how to enjoy the space over winter. There are multiple options and it comes down to your personal preference.
There are portable fire pits, which you can find at most outdoor stores or online. This allows you to pick different sizes, shapes and materials for the fire pit. Portable fire pits also are typically wood burning. You can also build a fire pit into the patio design and connect to a gas line for easy burning and enjoyment.
